Tinnitus

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound which is hidden, or you are hearing sounds that are not actually there. This is typically sounds such as buzzing, whistling, whining, hissing, humming or ringing noise in the ears and is often noticed much more when it is quiet, such as at night. For some the sound can be intermittent and in severe cases it can be permanent. Tinnitus also causes loss of effective hearing.

What Causes Tinnitus?

The most common cause of tinnitus is exposure to excessive noise. Employees working in the construction, production, shipyards, car assembly lines, coal mines, textiles and other factory or construction work are at risk of developing hearing loss and Tinnitus.

There are many cases of late-onset of tinnitus. Many people have worked in industries where they had temporary ringing noise after a particularly noisy shift and it wasn’t until years after that they noticed ringing / buzzing noises.
